Curriculum & Programs

At Charles Turner Joy Elementary School, our teachers instruct according to National Standards set by the US government. Standards are shared expectations by the school and educators. They are a means of assessing progress and goals. They clearly state what we value and show what is important for students to succeed in today's world.
Simply put, they are what they need to know by the end of each year.
The following links are from the DoDDS website listing them by grade. You can also find these in your Parent Curriculum Guides (available on line). If you are unfamiliar with your child's standards, please take a moment to see what they are.

KOREAN HOST NATION PROGRAM
All students in Grades Kindergarten to 5, will have exposure to the Korean culture during the year. The central theme of our Korean culture program is to provide the student with an understanding of the customs and culture of the host nation in which we live. Students are given instruction in various phases of Korean culture to include songs, conversation, oriental crafts, festivals, customs, language, games, stories, and food.
MIDDLE GRADES PROGRAM
Teachers of students in Grades 6 to 8, are using 3 aspects of the Advancement Via Individual Determination Program (AVID): This program is available to encourage students to consider a college career.  This is the website:  http://www.avidonline.org/

  1. Organizational skills are emphasized in the form of the Agenda and their 5 subject binder with pockets for homework.  Assignments, tests, quizzes, papers, etc., must be written down daily for each of their classes in their Agenda.  The binder is used to take notes and place their homework assignments in the folder pockets when they receive them.  It is ideal for them to then take their assignment out at home, complete it, put it back in their folder pocket, and turn it in to their teacher when it is due.
  2. Study Skills:  These are tools to help students get the most out of review, or academic study.
  3. Cornell Note Taking:   This is a systematic and organized way of taking notes  - see this website:  http://coe.jmu.edu/learningtoolbox/cornellnotes.html
  4. Student Support:  Teachers are available to give students help and support before and after school – especially during Homework Club on Tuesdays after school.
  5. Enrichment Activities in the Content Areas.  Students will be given periodic assignments designed to enrich their learning in Science, Math, History, and Language Arts.

Electives offered this year in the afternoons are:  Family Consumer Science, Piano, Health,  Physical Education, Computer Applications and Korean Language
Gradespeed Online is an electronic web based grade book for DoDDS in which parents and students have access.  You can check on your child’s grades, and upcoming assignments with their due dates.

Sharepoint is an online program that all DoDDS schools are using to post school information.  It is meant as a communication device and has our school calendar on it.
