MARCH ACTIVITIES

These are our awesome student council members for 2008-2009.  Mr. H. is their advisor.   Officers are: President M.Q., Vice President M.B., Secretary A.B., and Treasurer J. O..  Other members include: J.P., H.-S. Y., M. S., A.S., J. H., N. O., and C.J. L. Students
Charles Turner Joy middle grade students had the unique opportunity to visit a U.S. Navy submarine, the U.S.S. Chicago on 12 March 2009.  The sub pulled into port at the Korean Naval base in Chinhae from its home base at Pearl Harbor Naval Station.  Mrs. H., Language Arts teacher at C.T. Joy secured the tour of the sub for the students.  The students met some very outstanding young sailors who took them on a tour of the ships three levels, the command and control center, the galley, sleeping quarters (very tight quarters in there), the sonar room, the engine room, the Ward Room, and the torpedo room.   They learned up close and personal how difficult the career of a submariner is.  One sailor commented that he and the crew enjoyed answering the detailed questions that were asked by the C.T. Joy students.  Mrs. H., Mr. V. (math), and Mr. H. (Science) accompanied the students.

C. T. Joy has a National Honor Society for the first time this year.  They have adopted the school library as their school/community project.  Every Thursday, the students stay and help the library aide, A. C.
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) will be working on a series of projects within the library for the remainder of the school year.  The projects include: re-organizing books in the library and setting up a new month by month NJHS recommendation shelf where students will pick out popular books for other students and the faculty.  The students will also help with: (1) setting up new bulletins of knowledge on the soft board which will help attract the attention of others and encourage them to read or (2) display “fun facts”.  NJHS is a highly motivated group with many ideas. C. T. Joy students and staff are looking forward to what they will bring to the school library.

All students in Grades 6-8 participated in World Math Day held on March 4th. They received a ‘Congratulations” from the World Math Team as they did an outstanding performance. All students and the teacher, Mr. V., said they enjoyed being part of the World Record. This year, there were: 204 Countries represented; 12,647 Cities/Towns participating; 38,058 Schools participating, 1,952,879 Students participating and 452,681,681 Questions correctly answered.
